We Believe Strongly and Support LOCAL Great Dane
Adoption. This means we would rather adopt within our area and
will give preference to adopters who are local. We encourage Out Of
Staters to adopt locally as well.
If your an out of stater still interested in adopting from Heartland Great Dane Rescue, Inc. Adopting from us will be much more difficult for you, you will be asked to do most of the work and all the travel and the process will take longer for you, simply because your out of our area. We expect more from you. Verification are harder and retrieving dogs should something go wrong is much more difficult. We do not want to have to retrieve a dog over such long distances, so we do our best to ensure we don't have to, but you will have to provide a safety net, just in case. Please be aware, Out of State Adopters must be very committed. If you are not committed this process will find you out.
There are 3 things you must know.
1. Our Local Adoption Area:
We adopt to the entire state of Oklahoma and up the I-35 corridor to Wichita, Kansas, on a regular basis. Note: We do not go past Wichita to the north, nor to we adopt beyond 30 miles east or west of the I-35 corridor. If you are not located within this described area, you are considered an out of area adopter. Please read on.
We do not adopt Danes to Texas.
Texas is saturated with Great Danes in need. If HGDR were to place a Dane in Texas it means one less quality home for a local Great Dane, who may not survive without that home.
To preserve local homes for these Danes HGDR WILL NOT place Oklahoma Danes In Texas.
Please Adopt in Texas if you Live in Texas.
2. Our Policy:
In addition to our regular adoption area, we do make adoptions on a case by case basis into other surrounding states, ( not Texas) but this is in conjunction with the existing Dane Rescue Groups in that area.
We do not knowingly, place a Dane in an area that has an established dane rescue unless that group approves of the adopter, the adoption, and is willing to help us retrieve the Dane if you need to return it.
The reasons we do this:
A. To preserve quality Dane homes in that area for local danes in need.
B. To support local Dane Rescue efforts.
C. We believe the best way to support adoptive families with after-adoption services is keep our adoptive families local.
D. We do not believe in long range transport by strangers, transport services, train or plane. It is not in the best interest of Great Danes, Adoptive Families, nor Great Dane Rescue as a whole to take part in long range transports. So we do not.
We urge you to adopt locally.
3. How Our Policy Works:
If you wish to adopt from Heartland Great Dane Rescue and you live outside our regular adoption area we ask you to seek out and contact your local Great Dane Rescue.
1. Find your local Great Dane Rescue Nationwide.
Not all rescue groups show up on every list, please check them all.
2. Attempt to Adopt Locally.
3. If they do not have a Great Dane you are interested in AND they are willing to work with us to place and help us retrieve the Dane: if for any reason you need to return it to us... then ask them to contact us at mjcates@cox.net on your behalf.
4. Once we have the approval from a local Great Dane Rescue to go ahead, you can fill out an application to start the process.
Please note: We ask ALL our Adopters to meet danes personally. You will need to travel to Oklahoma to do this. In addition, we require a 24 hour wait between meeting a dane and taking it home. This means an overnight stay in Oklahoma for you. Please consider this before you fill out an application to adopt.
