Welcome to My World!
I am about 4 years old and I arrived in foster care after a long, strange ordeal. I was cared for once, I was fed right, my teeth were cleaned and my nails were done, but something happened along the way and I ended up abandoned, skinny, filthy, with my nails so long I could hardly walk and frankly I was a bit miffed about it all. 3 weeks in a cage did nothing to improve my disposition.

Special Thanks to Bonnie Allen for dropping everything to spring me and drive me all the way from Green Country to OKC to my foster family. Love you, Baby!

When I came into rescue the first day I was thankful, don't get me wrong, but I did try to show my foster dog family who was boss. I was done being pushed around, but they were so nice to me, shared their food and welcomed me. My Foster Mom cleaned me up and did my nails. I just couldn't keep up the act. What a relief to be wanted again. Now that I have come around we are so happy together. We snuggle on the couch, we play outside, we roam the house together, I am wondering why I didn't see how great they were those first few days. If you ever get a chance, remember other Danes and Chihuahuas are great for snuggling.

Health wise I am in pretty good shape, I lost a lot of weight, but I am putting it back on slowly. I had too much to eat the first night in rescue and threw up, but after a few smaller meals I got the hang of it. I went to the vet and passed all my tests! No Heartworms, was treated for intestinal worms, got weighed... 77.7 lbs! The vet folks mentioned all those sevens and when they heard my story, they thought I was a lucky charm! I admit my luck has certainly changed for the better lately. My heart sounds good.  I got my vaccinations...no fun, but I hear I don't have to do that again for a while. I was good for the vet and stayed put and let them work.

I know my commands, its just been a long time since I heard them. I sit as soon as the treats come out. And I am getting familiar again with all the others. I lay still while my nails are getting done. Its so nice to be cared for again. I alert on cats but have not been tested with them, I have not been tested with small children, but I am good with dogs large and small, male and female. I just need time to get to know them. I am quite a food hound and have been known to get up on a chair to get to the bar where the food might be, and I have checked out the counter...a few times.

I guess this is a no-no, but such a temptation. I hear "off" alot so I guess the days for doing this are numbered.

I am looking for a home to give me what I was once so used to and now am getting in foster care, a loving home with other dogs who can accept me and help me feel safe. A family willing to tell me to sit, off, wait, etc. to keep me in line, because I am a bit of a rebel at first. Treats, games, short walks and plenty of cushy places to sleep. Is that too much to ask for? ...oh! Food...I love food, but don't let me get too fat. I can't cut myself off, so you will have control my intake so I stay healthy.

Update: Jenkies was euthanized, Thursday July 24th, 2008. Due to an irreversible Gastric Bloat and Torsion episode. She was suffering immeasurably and the decision was made to end her torture. She showed such promise for a better life, she had been so lucky to find rescue and all at HGDR had high hopes for her happy ending.   Please honor Jenkies by learning more about the symptoms of Bloat and Torsion and spreading the news about prevention of this dane killer. Farewell Miss Jenkies, we will miss you!
